As chilly as this day was, it was such a fun one!! We started out at the mine, where the kids quickly jumped back into their favorite horsey game and cozied into our warm little nook for story time. Lunch was shared together in the old wagon before we headed off to the mini forest to continue a full afternoon of play, exploration, and adventure together.
May 8
We started the day searching for goldenrod galls to turn into jewelry beads, tapping into traditional Indigenous practices and learning how they were once used creatively and resourcefully. The kids collected a surprising amount in no time at all before we headed down to the pond to try and beat the heat.
Only, we quickly realized our “pond” was no longer really a pond at all! The river has risen so high that it has completely engulfed it. We’ve never seen the water this high before!
Of course, that didn’t slow the kids down one bit. They quickly settled into exploring the water’s edge, building muddy slides, “mining” along the shoreline, and soaking up the sun while fully embracing the adventure.
Previous Weeks
In search of the perfect bird nest material, these wildlings embarked on a challenge. They earned bonus points for finding dry treasures amidst the soaking wet world! Once gathered, they constructed their nests and set to work igniting them aflame with ferro rods. Their determination was evident as they adjusted and struck until the flames finally caught.
With banana boats and hot chocolate warming over the fire, they swiftly disappeared into wild play, a kind of play only children truly comprehend. It was filled with imagination, ever-changing rules, and boundless energy!
We slowed down the day using our senses as we listened, watched, and noticed the little things in nature that we usually overlook.
And finished it off with a hilarious bear story that had everyone laughing! 🐻
These wildlings made the most of the warm weather, stretching out and filling their time with what called to them most! There was potion-making in the mud kitchen, hammocks for relaxing in the heat, superheroes saving the day, a racetrack in the works, rock coloring, and story time during snack, which everyone surprisingly took at the same time today! We then explored along the shoreline and discovered a surprising number of crawfish. These wildlings would make great treasure hunters! We finished the day by learning about the bee life cycle and enjoying a leisurely walk back!
What an egg-tastic day! The wildlings were given a special mission, to care for their very own egg, with the promise it could turn into a chocolate treat. For many, one egg quickly became three to five, which made things even more fun.
They dove into egg dyeing, built cozy little egg homes, and even made hard-boiled eggs to enjoy. We wrapped up the day with a sparkler surprise through the eggs and an exciting egg puzzle hunt.
Their energy and excitement made the whole day a memorable one!
We started the day with circle time and a foraging walk, where we collected everything green we could for our tea, including mullein, wormwood, and grass ;). We collected dry fire-starting material and looked for tracks along the way. We headed back to the fire pit to work together to start a fire using a ferro rod, made tornado potatoes and our foraged tea (added cinnamon and honey too!), and made bird feeders for the return of migrating birds!
We played the day away and ended with games and group storytelling, which brought on lots of laughs!
